NEWS

Happening this Week

  • The Flash Stick. The selfie stick we all love to hate could now could now come in clutch with this actually SMART way of using it on a wedding day… laurashepherdimages posted this reel that shows off using it as a long flash handle, and like a normal light stand when on a flat surface.

  • New ZOOM lens winners. Sigma recently announced their new 28-105mm f2.8 lens. Insane focal length coverage. And with many of us finding that we aren’t shooting so much at low low apertures, this lens could be a wedding winner. Here’s a great review.

  • Apple and what it believes about photography. Apple’s VP of camera software engineering Jon McCormack stated that photography is “a personal celebration of something that really, actually happened”. Comforting words in the AI photo age? See the full story here.

  • AI Retouching in Aftershoot. Aftershoot announced this week that they are adding skin retouching to their AI offering. Coming this November, you can see the details here.

  • Canon eats nearly half of all camera sales. New figures released this week show that Canon is still top dog when it comes to camera sales with 46% market share. Jump in here to see the rest of the stats.

  • 10 Detail Shot Ideas. We like them all! Wedding photographer moosho shared ten different detail shot ideas this week.

PLANNING

💡 Twisting Timelines

Making Time
How did they get that shot? How did that situation happen? They must have had SO MUCH TIME to set that up… The truth is, they probably did. And yes, they did pre plan it…

We often bail out and say “you know weddings are just chaotic and the name of the game is ‘make the best thing you can in the moment’.” HOWEVER… there is another way. If you play your cards right, there is a lot you can do to make sure you have the time and space on the day to do something more than wing it. So get involved, get planning with the planner and couple and TELL THEM WHAT YOU NEED.

Twist that timeline to your advantage.

Of course, you won’t get all the time in the world at every phase of the day, so it’s all about being strategic. Think of a FEW moments through the day where you want to make something MORE, and carve out that time.
Maybe you know there is an amazing staircase in the lobby at the hotel.. Then work the timeline so you have plenty of time to shoot with just the bride before the ceremony. PLAN IT.
Maybe you envision an incredible wide shot of the couple and the venue.. You need the place clear of people, and you need 5-10 extra mins. Then work with the planner and timeline before the day to ensure you can make it happen. PLAN IT.
Maybe it’s a super cool group shot you can see and you know it’ll take 10-15 mins to set everyone up. PLAN IT.

The planners, your couple, they want your vision and input (this is why they hired you) and want to know how to make it happen on the day. So don’t wait till you are at the wedding, frustrated about timings. PLAN IT.

It’s all in the buffer
We spoke this week with danielknightharris about this amazing shoot (above) he created and how he is re-working timelines to give ‘buffers’ to each section of the day to try and make this kind of imagery MORE possible on a wedding day. PS go check out his shoot here.

Yes, it means more work before the day in communication with your couple. But it’s worth it. And it’s how you will improve.

EDITING

🌤️ (warmish) Tones

It’s back.
Are we seeing a little resurgence of some warm(ish) tones? The last few weeks we have seen this ⬆️ warm vibe a lot more. Mixed with with a low contrast curve, the greens made more yellow… It’s that washed, warm, flat and filmy look. We’re fans of the look when it stays in the spectrum of what feels natural. Above, it’s a sunny day, so the whole edit is warmed up to accentuate that feel.

With the days of the orange edit behind us, maybe we are free to get a little more BOLD with our edits.

Speaking of BOLD
Trust The Ferros to push things along. This week we saw them post a recent shoot they captured at Lake Como. See the whole set here and note how they have REALLY pushed the edit. They dove head first into a ‘film vibe’ with big grain, halation, and strong curves and colours.

They aint scared so why should you be. Let this be a sign to try something new.
