MINI REPORT

Whatā€™s good with posing in 2024?

Images by: @bringmesomewherenice and @haute.weddings

This year ainā€™t about sticking to your standard, go to directions and poses. Jump into our mini report on what we are seeing in posing at the moment:

In 2024 weā€™ve got an interesting mix of posing philosophies all thrown together into one mixed up vibe. On one hand we have the rise of what we are calling ā€˜documentary posingā€™ where we want to keep things seemingly candid and natural. On the other hand, we have editorial, strong, and really set up posing. Both living together, both in the mix. Another way to put this? We want EITHER over the top posing, or to look like there is no posing at all. The in-between is dead.

So how does this play out and what are some ideas?

Normal but not ideas

Normal but not
We are seeing poses that are normal, with a twist. A classic ā€˜just kiss eachotherā€™ or ā€˜stand and look down the cameraā€™, but with something intentionally added to the frame to change it up. An element of surprise. The addition of a prop, a hand, a leg, a bag, a bottle. These poses and concepts are natural but well thought out. Documentary with addition. A little editorial thrown in perhaps. Love the remix having the cameras and make up artist in the bottom right photo from Danilo and Sharon.

Layered Posing

Layered Poses
Leaning further into a documentary vibe, we are going to see a lot of layered poses. This might mean having one person in front or to the side of the other. One waaay behind the other. Or shooting over one of their shoulders. Since when did they always have to stand side by side the WHOLE time anyway?

This isnā€™t going anywhere

When we pose, we are posing strong.
Itā€™s anything but a standard ā€˜stand next to eachotherā€™ pose. Itā€™s strong posing. We will see photographers leaning further into this editorial vibe and setting up planned shots even more. It might be using chairs, changing up heights with lying down or sitting, even leaning and elongating arms and legs against a wall or structure. You may even show your couple the pose you want. And then let them sit there a while and get them comfortable. Slowly coach them down into a more serious vibe and atmosphere before shooting. Raise chins, point shoulders and make sure their posture is on point. This takes time, planning and patience.

Simple prompts to look natural when ā€˜not posingā€™

Simple Prompts.
Whenever we arenā€™t posing super strong, we will see small simple prompts take over. Itā€™s the quick instruction of how to link arms while walking, upgrading slightly from the holding hands while walking shot. A simple,ā€™ just hang on his shoulderā€™ rather than a fully planned standing pose. A light instruction to put the veil on and off while leaning next to each other.

The TLDR: We are either fully posing our shots in an over the top way, or trying not to pose them at all.
