DRONES

The big deal about drones

The impossible made possible.
Not long ago, photos like this ā¬†ļø were impossible. Who would have thought that we could easily own and operate a tiny flying camera that can do this?! Itā€™s wild.

Drones changed the game for wedding videographers. But can also do the same for photographers! They offer a completely unique perspective. Capturing the context, showing off a venue, symmetry, grandnessā€¦ We especially love it for a walk down the isle shot. Acting as a kind of second/third shooter if you do it right!

Intrigued?
Us too, more below!

Fitting drones into your workflow. Our top tips:

  • Quiet is key. If you want to use it in key moments (which you do) youā€™ll draw attention if your drone is loud. Itā€™s ummmm, awkwardā€¦ So the smaller and quieter the better. The Mini series from DJI is as quiet as it gets and is our recommendation for wedding photographers. The DJI Mini 4Pro is perfect.

  • Inform the planner and couple. Mention where and when you are planning to use your drone to the wedding planner and your couple to avoid them wondering if itā€™s your drone, or someone else's.

  • Keep your drone insight. Yes we know many drones now have advanced obstacle avoidance and great return to home functions. But sometimes things go wrong. The last thing you want on a wedding day is to loose your drone, crash it, draw attention to yourself or worse, damage property. Just keep it within eye sight at all times.

  • Check before you promise. Make sure you check local laws and restrictions before you promise drone coverage. Ensure you can fly at and around your venue. This website is the best for checking flight restricted areas.

  • Us it as a ceremony Second Shooter. Now here is our fav use of a drone on a wedding day. You can put up your drone a few minutes before the ceremony starts, find your frame and hover the drone there. Set a timer so the drone will take an image every 2-3 seconds. That way youā€™ll have the perfect shot of the bride coming down the isle. Once the couple is at the front and ceremony is started, come back to your drone, fly it around for another minute to get a few angles and land it. Just like have a second shoot for you during the walk in!
