IDEAS

šŸšØ Detail shots are changing

Letā€™s cut to the chase.
When thinking about detail shots in the getting ready stages, things are changing. The NEW is this:
1. Basically we are just putting less things (details) together.
2. We are connecting them (the details) to the wider story, colour or aesthetic of the day

Detail shots used to be about arranging ALL the little things together nicely and taking a few photos. The more details the better. And yesā€¦ A classic flat lay done well is still AMAZINGā€¦ but we are seeing more photographers opt for a more minimal, concepted approach to detail shotsā€¦

Itā€™s an approach that connects an aspect of the object with something relevant to the wedding. And what would you knowā€¦ Itā€™s a vibe. It helps to build a world and highlight what is special about the detail. And it just makes more sense than throwing them together on the ground or the bed and taking a photo.

So how do you do it?
Focus down into something interesting about the object and then make a BIG DEAL about it.

A cool colour on the bottom of the shoes? Make a big deal by contrasting it against something else. Interesting big earrings? Make a big deal by placing them in some light that is a theme on the day - maybe harsh sun. Got a cool bag? Make a big deal by setting it on a texture that is relevant to the day - sand, stone, grass, a curtain, water, a hedge??

Donā€™t just throw it into a flat lay, sprinkle over a few petals and ribbons and call it a day. Take your thinking a step further. Consider the different aspects of a detail and then put it somewhere thoughtful in the environment of the wedding and connect the two (the object and the environment).

NEWS

Happening this Week

  • How to make your batteries last longer. This article explores new evidence that that confirms what we all thought was just a fib - the first charge is the most important charge!!

  • Instagrams ā€˜Broadcast Channelsā€™ are where it is at. SO many photographers have been recently sharing some absolute behind the scenes gold and inspo on their broadcast channels. See ohh.ginger and koko_king_photo for some good ones.

  • The smallest DJI drone ever. DJI announced a new drone this week and itā€™s smaller than ever. The NEO. Could this be the form factor that eventually wins for wedding photographers?

  • Leica completes the trinity. Officially announcing their new 70-200mm L-Mount lens.

  • A glimpse of the future of photography from Apple. Last night Apple released their new iPhone 16, and 16 Pro. And while the design might not look much different, (why fix what aint broke) there are some hints of some big changes brewing in their photography and camera updates. Here is a great, quick break down of everything announced by Apple last night. From the awesome new camera control button on the side, to the live edit preview inside the video side of thingsā€¦ Apple is slowing bringing AI features into the camera and itā€™s only a matter of time before we start seeing the kind of AI features that are in our editing programs, right in our camerasā€¦ wild times.

  • This way to hold your flash is a jokeā€¦ Or is it?

  • Lighter = Better. Nikon hits with a great news lens for wedding pros. Their new 50mm 1.4 for Z-Mount.

TRENDS

šŸ”„ Backdrops are HOT

Itā€™s not completely new (what is?) but a new trend we have been seeing everywhere the last few weeks is the use of ā€˜studioā€™ backdrops outside at weddings. Setting up some lightstands, bringing a back drop (loving the silver option here) and make magic. (link - a reel that shows some cool ones). Itā€™s a really cool way to simplify a busy background and make something look intentional and concepted.

BUT. You may have noticed a slightly quicker turnaround in ā€˜trendsā€™ this yearā€¦ So be quick. This is still a full vibe, but the time is this summer to make some images like this. Youā€™ll be ahead of the curve before everrrryone is doing it. More on this whole chat soon.

And while we are talking trends. Demure. Mindful. Already been and gone so donā€™t jump on that train plzzz.
